The Woodlands, TX – The Woodlands Waterway Arts Festival has announced the selection of Barbara Franklet as the featured artist for the second annual event set for April 14 and 15, 2007, along The Woodlands Waterway®. Festival hours are 10 a.m. – 8 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $10 for adults. Children 12 and under are admitted free of charge.
Franklet’s artwork will appear in festival advertising, as well as merchandise including festival T-shirts and tote bags. Commemorative posters signed by Franklet will be available at the festival for $15. The original painting also will be for sale at the event.
"We are thrilled to have Barbara Franklet as the featured artist for The Woodlands Waterway Arts Festival," said Brenda Gottlieb, festival chairwoman. "Franklet’s whimsical work will add a different element to this year’s festival."
Franklet, a longtime resident of Houston, is no stranger to the festival art scene. She has been an artist at the Bayou City Arts Festival for the past eight years and was one of the 200 artists at the inaugural Woodlands Waterway Arts Festival in May 2006.
Franklet explains that her art is a reflection of the world around her.
“Many of the images I create are of the wonderful people around me,” said Franklet. “Most pictures have stories to go along with them.”
The featured artwork, “Having a Ball,” is not an exception. In this piece, Franklet has incorporated pine trees, the letters WWAF which stand for Woodlands Waterway Arts Festival, the number two representing the second year of the festival, and the sculpture “Rise of the Midgard Serpent” by Marc Rosenthal which can be found in Lake Woodlands. Her hope is that this oil pastel painting captures the fun everyone has at the festival.
After losing both parents in 1999, Franklet decided to become a full-time artist. She creates her wonderful works in her Montrose studio.
“All I ever wanted to be was an artist,” she said. “Life is about small celebrations and I hope the featured piece, ‘Having a Ball,’ shows my enthusiasm for the festival, The Woodlands and the world around me.”
The Woodlands Waterway Arts Festival is a juried fine art show featuring 200 national and regional artists of various mediums selling their original creations. The festival will take place along the meandering Waterway from The Woodlands Waterway Marriott Hotel and Convention Center alongside The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion and culminating at Town Green Park. This beautifully landscaped site in the heart of The Woodlands features ample parking, water taxi and trolley service along the entire length of the festival, concessions within the festival site, and an array of eateries and shops within walking distance of the festival.
"The WWAF has generated a tremendous amount of interest from many touring fine artists throughout the United States," said Lynette Wallace, festival director. "The artists are excited about this event and look forward to the beautiful locale and the art patrons it will attract."
