Over 42,000 concertgoers attended three concerts last weekend, the highest weekend attendance this season. The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion hosted Hootie & the Blowfish July 28, Kelly Clarkson July 29 and Def Leppard and Journey July 30. Kelly Clarkson and Def Leppard were both sold out concerts.
Ten thousand fans attended the Hootie & the Blowfish concert Friday night. Concertgoers brought school supplies to help more than 1,500 students at Johnson Elementary in Aldine ISD and Runyan Elementary in Conroe ISD. Their generous donations filled two 47-passenger buses to the roof with supplies.
Both the sold out Clarkson and Def Leppard concerts had over 16,200 in attendance and posted the highest weekend of tickets sold. These concerts reinforced the July 24, 2006 edition of Pollstar magazine, ranking The Pavilion second in the listing of top amphitheatres in the world based on the number of tickets sold during the first six months of 2006. This weekend was the first performance for 2002 American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson at The Pavilion. Def Leppard and Journey are crowd favorites and have played at The Pavilion numerous times.
“This weekend was another great weekend of sales and entertainment at The Pavilion,” said Jerry MacDonald, president and CEO of The Pavilion. “The first part of 2006 has been tremendous which is reflected in the Pollstar magazine ranking. The second half of our season is equally strong.” The August line up includes Aug. 5 Tom Petty; Aug. 6 Family Values Tour featuring Korn, Deftones, and Stone Sour; Aug. 11 KC’s Boogie Blast featuring KC & The Sunshine Band, Gloria Gaynor, Sister Sledge and Tavares; Aug. 18 Dave Matthews Band; Aug. 26 Reggae Sunsplash featuring UB40, Toots & The Maytals, Maxi Priest and Third World and Aug. 27 Godsmack and Rob Zombie.
