The Woodlands, TX – Join the Mardi Gras atmosphere at The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion May 25 at 7:30 p.m. featuring the Side Street Strutters as they perform an exciting Dixieland jazz program with the Houston Symphony, under the direction of Michael Krajewski.
Krajewski, who began his role as Houston Symphony principal pops conductor in the 2000-01 season, is a favorite with concertgoers across the country. The much sought-after pops conductor is known for his imaginative and entertaining programs and his delightfully wry sense of humor. Audiences who attend his concerts leave smiling, remembering the evening’s music and surprises.
The Side Street Stutters formed in 1983 when a group of talented musicians attending Arizona State University created a musical ensemble whose artistic focus centered on the musical traditions of early New Orleans jazz. Now, more than two decades later, the same core members are still together and have expanded their musical palette to include more than a half century of jazz styles, from early New Orleans Dixieland and Blues to Big Band Swing and popular standards.
Under Krajewski’s baton, the Symphony and Side Street Strutters perform favorites like “Tiger Rag,” “Dixie Medley,” and “Sing, Sing, Sing.” Guests also will enjoy beloved tunes like “Bill Bailey, Won’t You Please Come Home?,” “Sweet Georgia Brown,” “It Don’t Mean a Thing (If It Ain’t Got That Swing),” and much more. Side Street Strutters CDs will be available to purchase and members will be on hand to autograph CDs after the performance.
Pre-concert activities in the Chicago Title-The Woodlands Plaza include: Mardi Gras hat making, face painting and bubble fun at the Learning Express Jack & Jill Club; Mardi Gras mask making at The Pavilion Partners tent; and local theater company, Class Act Productions, performing on the side stage from 6:45 - 7:15 p.m. Class Act's repertoire includes a medley of songs from Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals, such as the 1940s hit "Route 66," songs from the Broadway musical "Footloose," and a medley of songs by Irving Berlin. Chick-fil-A and Woodforest National Bank also will be on hand with fun activities for the family! The first 500 people in the gate receive a free t-shirt and Mardi Gras beads. Guests can register-to-win Tommy Bahama’s “Best Seats in the House.” Entries are eligible to win VIP parking and dinner for four catered by Tommy Bahama's during the next performing arts event. Join us for these and other festivities before the main event! Doors open at 6:30 p.m. The main stage performance begins at 7:30 p.m.
