The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion sizzles May 24 as Cuban sensation Tiempo Libre heats up the stage with the Houston Symphony for Hot Night in Havana at 8 p.m. Tickets are $15 for orchestra seating. Mezzanine and lawn seating are free courtesy of The Wortham Foundation. Tickets are not required for free seating. Gates open at 7 p.m. This event is sponsored in part by Houston Family Magazine and Rico’s Restaurants.
Under the white-hot baton of Michael Krajewski, the temperature soars as Tiempo Libre, one of the hottest young Latin bands today, performs the dance-inducing Mambo, Bolero and Cha-Cha-Cha medleys plus “Santana Suite,” “Tico Tico,” “Tu Conga Bach” and more. Be part of the fun by joining dancers from Strictly Street Salsa on the dance floor during the concert.
Tiempo Libre, a three-time GRAMMY®-nominated group, creates a giant Cuban dance party with its infectious tropical rhythms. The group’s most recent album, “My Secret Radio,” was released in 2011. It pays homage to Tiempo Libre’s teenage years in Cuba, features guest performances by jazz singer Rachelle Fleming, and reunites Tiempo Libre founder Jorge Gomez with legendary Cuban songstress Albita. Tiempo Libre’s first recording, “Bach in Havana,” was nominated for a GRAMMY® and featured tracks with Paquito D’Rivera and Yosvany Terry. Equally at home in concert halls, jazz clubs and dance venues, Tiempo Libre’s Miami- based members are true modern heirs to the rich tradition of the music of their native Cuba. Classically trained at Cuba’s premiere conservatories, the group is a hit in the U.S. and abroad, celebrated for its incendiary, joyful performances of timba, an irresistible, dance-inducing mix of high-voltage Latin jazz and seductive rhythms.
Strictly Street Salsa gets you movin’ and groovin’ before the concert with salsa dancing on the Side Stage in the Fidelity Investments Plaza starting at 7 p.m. Other pre-concert activities include The Pavilion Partners Instrument Petting Zoo and Arts & Crafts booth, Fidelity Investments, Amazing Siding, Woodforest National Bank, CASA, Houston Family Magazine and Audi of America, official automobile of The Pavilion. Guests also can register to win Tommy Bahama’s “Best Seats in the House.”
