The Center for the Performing Arts at The Woodlands, home to The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, hosts approximately 6,000 students from Conroe Independent School District for Fine Arts Education Day: A David Dewhurst Symphony Explorer Concert featuring the Houston Symphony May 18 at 10:30 a.m.

This program was created for Conroe ISD fourth grade students to experience orchestral music and learn about the various instruments in both band and orchestra. This year, as a result of The Pavilion’s 2009 expansion and increased reserved seating capacity, sixth grade band and orchestra students from CISD also are invited to attend the event, as well as band and orchestra students from Peet and Moorhead junior high schools. For these students, the concert serves as inspiration for them to continue their studies in music. The program also helps students learn to listen actively and purposefully.

“Our hope for this event is to provide role models for these students and offer them encouragement to take band or orchestra in fifth grade,” said Cindy DuBois, director of marketing and education for The Pavilion. “For the older students, we simply want to inspire them to stick with it.”

The Fine Arts Education Day concert features the Houston Symphony under the skillful direction of Brett Mitchell. The program, “Six Flags Over Texas,” features music about, or by composers from, the countries of which Texas has been a part. Designed to support the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS), the program includes Bizet’s Suite No. 1 from “Carmen,” Copland’s “Lincoln Portrait,” Turina’s Danzas fantásticas, Opus 22, Moncayo’s “Huapango,” and John Williams’ “The Cowboys Overture.” Teachers Guidebooks are available to all of the schools prior to the event.

“The TEKS curriculum connection makes this program even more valuable for teachers and students,” DuBois said. “It adds another educational dimension to the experience.”

Fine Arts Education Day is a FREE program produced by The Pavilion in conjunction with CISD and the Houston Symphony.
