Houston Ballet demonstrates its diversity with the supercharged mixed repertory program Carnival of Dance featuring Hush, Velocity and Carnival of the Animals at The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion Friday, Oct. 5 at 8 p.m. Presented by KRIV FOX26 and KTXH My20, this program consists of three dances inspired by different styles of music that highlight the versatility of the dancers.
The first of these dances, Hush, was created especially for Houston Ballet by renowned British choreographer and Houston Ballet Associate Choreographer Christopher Bruce. Featuring six dancers who perform to selected tracks from the album “Hush” by Bobby McFerrin and Yo-Yo Ma, the piece examines life backstage with a theater family. Because the characters in this ballet include a mother, father and four children, this celebration of life has captured audiences young and old.
The second ballet, Velocity, is described as a “hyper-kinetic tutu ballet” and is a traditional ballet mixed with a need for speed. Set to sharp, angular music by American composer Michael Torke, this high-speed riff on classical ballet technique by Artistic Director Stanton Welch tests the limits and talents of the eight men and eight women starring in it. Velocity’s gray set, based on the paintings of Dutch artist Piet Mondrian (1872–1944), emphasizes the clean look of the dancers footwork.
The third ballet in Carnival of Dance is Carnival of the Animals, a fantastic voyage into the mind of a young schoolboy who falls asleep in a natural history museum. During this wondrous, dream-like evening, we witness a magical parade of animal-like humans. This colorful ballet showcases the talents of Christopher Wheeldon, one of hottest choreographers working today. This family friendly ballet is said to be the perfect introduction to the world of ballet.
Carnival of Dance is the second of three performances presented by KRIV FOX26 and KTXH My20 this fall at The Pavilion. The networks also sponsored James Bond: License to Thrill Aug. 30 and are presenting sponsors for the 13th Annual Children’s Festival Nov. 10 and 11.
