The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion welcomes the dancers of Houston Ballet back to the outdoor stage for their Mixed Repertory Program. Join us for an evening of varied works with Houston Ballet on Thursday, Oct. 1 at 8 p.m. Tickets are on sale now. Orchestra seating is $20 with free mezzanine and lawn seating courtesy of Cullen Trust for the Performing Arts.
The Mixed Repertory Program will sample pieces from the company’s recent performances of “Tapestry,” “Reveal” and “Ghost Dances,” artfully transitioning between contrasting theatrical works. Audience members will be taken on a journey through the creative mind of Artistic Director Stanton Welch in his artful direction and combination of the varied components of the Mixed Repertory Program.
The evening begins with the story of “Tapestry,” following Stanton Welch’s concept of his dance company paralleling a tapestry. Welch tells a story with each movement of the company, just as a tapestry weaves an intricate design with each colorful thread.
Less than a week before coming to The Pavilion, the Houston Ballet will perform the world premiere of Garret Smith’s “Reveal” in Houston, Texas. Smith, a former dancer in the company, intends to show audiences “the challenge of truly revealing one’s self and daring to look into the mirror and accept who you are, not how others have framed you.” Guided by Smith’s choreography, audiences will face their own ideas of self-reflection and vulnerability.
“Ghost Dances,” a signature piece for Houston Ballet, mixes traditional South American folk dances with Christopher Bruce's highly athletic, contemporary choreography. The contrast between dance styles challenges both the dancers and audience members to recognize the beauty in this combination of traditional and innovative choreography.
Artistic Director Stanton Welch joined Houston Ballet in 2003 and has worked tirelessly to challenge and improve the Ballet. The Houston Ballet has reached new heights in its most recent seasons, far exceeding previous expectations and catching the attention of new audiences.
Pre-performance activities begin when the gates open at 7 p.m. in the North Plaza, sponsored by Fidelity Investments, Renewal by Andersen and Century 21 Realty Partners.
