This summer at The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, more than 100 gifted musicians from around the world are showcased in a free concert. In conjunction with the Immanuel and Helen Olshan Texas Music Festival, an intensive four-week study program at the University of Houston’s Moores School of Music, the Texas Music Festival Orchestra takes the stage June 14 for Legendary Masterpieces. Tickets are not required. Gates open at 7 p.m.
Under the direction of Horst Förster, these young artists perform the masterpieces of Richard Strauss’ “Don Juan,” Op. 2 and Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5. “Don Juan” is based on the poem of the same name by Nikolaus Lenus. Much of the musical work’s passion is drawn from the poem. Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5 is a cyclical symphony with a recurring main theme. The theme has a funereal character in the first movement, but gradually transforms into a triumphant march.
The finalists and winner of the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Young Artist Competition will be announced. Join us in supporting and celebrating these talented young artists. The University of Houston Moores School of Music sponsors the Texas Music Festival’s intensive four-week program that allows young musicians from all parts of the world to perform together and compete against one another. These Orchestral Fellows are advanced students and young professional musicians.
The Pavilion is welcoming the Boys Scouts of America at Texas Music Festival where they can complete their Music Merit Badge. Activities they can visit are The Pavilion Partners Instrument Petting Zoo with different types of musical instruments and Partners Arts & Crafts booth to make a musical instrument and learn about important people in American music. They can visit two different stylistic live performances including The School of Rock in the North Plaza and the Texas Music Festival Orchestra on the main stage.
At Legendary Masterpieces guests can rock out to the sounds of The School of Rock The Woodlands performing on the Side Stage in the North Plaza from 7:15-7:45 p.m. School of Rock has two groups performing, Dean’s List and Honor Roll. They also are helping interested Boy Scouts earn their Music Merit badge by performing selections that meet the criteria for the badge. Stop by the Side Stage to enter a drawing for a chance to win two full month scholarships, 20 percent off a month’s enrollment and more with School of Rock.
Other plaza activities starting at 7 p.m. are with The Pavilion Partners, Fidelity Investments, Woodforest National Bank, Renewal by Andersen and Audi of America, official automobile of The Pavilion. Get insight into the evening’s program with Pavilion Talk, a free pre-concert discussion led by noted music scholar and former college professor Ira J. Black from 7:15-7:45 p.m. The first 500 guests to enter the gates receive a free T-shirt as a souvenir!
At all symphonies, guests are welcome to have a picnic in their seat or on the hill. Keep in mind that beverages cannot be brought into The Pavilion. Sitting on the hill? Lawn chairs also are provided free for this event!
Preferred parking is available in the on-site Town Center Garage, located along Six Pines Drive. Parking is $5 per vehicle for this and most performing arts events. Tickets for on-site parking can be purchased in advance at all Ticketmaster locations and The Pavilion Box Office. Guests also may park in any of the five free parking lots on the southwest side of The Pavilion. The free, color-coded lots are connected to The Pavilion by corresponding pathways with signs leading across The Waterway.
