In addition to the haunting fun of the Houston Symphony’s Hocus Pocus Pops on Oct. 23 at The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, the 5th Annual “Spooktacular” Creative Writing Contest is sure to be a Halloween treat.
All ghosts and ghouls in grades K-12 are invited to create an original scary story to submit to the “Spooktacular” Creative Writing Contest for a chance to win the grand prize. Your thrilling tale can be based on personal experience, or completely made up. Get creative!
To enter in the contest, type your spooky story double-spaced in 12 point font or handwrite in ink, double-spaced. There is a 1,000-word maximum. Attach a cover page, including your name, age, grade, mailing address, phone number and email. Include your name on the cover sheet only, NOT within the story. Submissions will be reviewed by Simply Tutoring, and winners will be chosen based on originality and creativity (40%), style and content (30%), spelling and grammar (20%) and neatness (10%).
One winner will be selected from each grade category to win four VIP tickets to Hocus Pocus Pops with the Houston Symphony (including a Pavilion garage parking pass and four passes for the Woodforest Bank VIP Club) on Oct. 23, a $50 Amazon gift card and see their spooky essay published in the Hocus Pocus Pops program. From the pool of finalists, one essay will be picked from a cauldron as the grand prize winner. The selected author will receive an Amazon Kindle Fire and their essay will be printed in The Courier and The Villager newspapers.
Your “Spooktacular” submissions are due by Oct. 2, 2015 at 5 p.m. to firstname.lastname@example.org or 2005 Lake Robbins Drive The Woodlands, TX 77380 ATTN: Essay Contest. If mailed, your submission must be postmarked by this deadline. For more information about the “Spooktacular” Creative Writing Contest or Hocus Pocus Pops, please visit www.woodlandscenter.org.
