Commemorate the birth of our nation at the Houston Symphony’s Star-Spangled Salute July 3 at 8 p.m. at The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion. The Houston Symphony performs a selection of patriotic favorites at this free Independence Eve spectacular, sponsored by Woodlands Development Company. Tickets are not required for free seating. Gates open at 6:30 p.m.

Principal Pops Conductor Michael Krajewski heads the symphony as it performs a variety of traditional favorites including “Fanfare and Star-Spangled Banner,” “Fanfare for Freedom,” America from “West Side Story,” “March from Midway,” “Southern Comfort,” “Orange Blossom Special,” “Service Medley,” “God Bless America.” Be sure to stay for the grand finale as the Symphony performs Tchaikovsky’s “1812 Overture,” complete with booming cannons from atop the hill!

Special guests performing with the symphony at Star-Spangled Salute are Space Station Expedition 35 Commander Chris Hadfield and the Pearl Hall Elementary Children’s Choir. They perform an original piece entitled “Big Smoke,” a song written by Hadfield’s brother during a space shuttle launch. Ron Solomon also joins the symphony as the narrator on “Liberty for All.”

Star-Spangled Salute kicks off at 6:30 p.m. with pre-concert festivities in the Fidelity Investments Plaza. Join Betsy Ross, Paul Revere and Martha & George Washington singing patriotic music in the plaza and on the hill. Come see a living Statue of Liberty in the plaza, as well as strolling characters including Barkley, Puffy Pine Cone and Uncle Sam. Other activities include The Pavilion Partners Instrument Petting Zoo and activity zone where kids can make red, white and blue bracelets, Woodforest National Bank, Montgomery Country Food Bank, The Woodlands Development Company, Radio Disney Road Crew and Audi of America, official automobile of The Pavilion. Guests can also register for Tommy Bahama’s “Best Seats in the House.”

At the concert have a picnic in your seat or on the hill. Free lawn chairs also are available for this and other applicable performing arts events. Keep in mind that beverages cannot be brought into The Pavilion. 

Preferred parking is available in the on-site Town Center Garage, located along Six Pines Drive.  Parking is $5 per vehicle for this and most performing arts events. Tickets for on-site parking can be purchased in advance at all Ticketmaster locations and The Pavilion Box Office. Guests also may park in any of the five free parking lots on the southwest side of The Pavilion. The free, color-coded lots are connected to The Pavilion by corresponding pathways with signs leading across The Waterway.
