Twelve young musicians got a chance of a lifetime at the Rockstar Energy Drink Uproar Festival Aug. 29 at The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion. Students from School of Rock The Woodlands had an opportunity to watch the sound check for Circa Survive, tour backstage and several of the tour buses before the concert. The concert featured Alice in Chains, Jane’s Addiction, Coheed and Cambria and Circa Survive.

The School of Rock focuses on rock bands as a method of educating students how to become a professional musician. One of the bands performing at the concert, Alice in Chains, is a band they study and whose material they perform. Marc Reczek, general manager and music director for the school uses Alice in Chains’ style of music as a method of teaching.

“Today was really awesome, because we got to meet some of the band members and see what it is like to be in a rock band,” said Natalie Ware, an 8-year-old student at the School of Rock. “I am a drummer and hope to play in a band when I am older. This was fantastic!”

The production team of the Uproar Festival escorted the kids on stage and gave a tour of the set. The kids received drumsticks, guitar picks and a meet and greet with Alice in Chains. Anthony Green of Circa Survive greeted the students and posed for a group photo. The group learned how much work goes into installing the truck loads of equipment required for a big stage production. Then after the show it all comes down, goes back on the trucks and the entire tour production drives to the next city on their itinerary.

“This was a great chance, not only for The Pavilion, but the bands involved with the Uproar Festival to give back to the community,” said Jerry MacDonald, president and CEO of The Pavilion. “Sometimes the reputations and images of rock bands aren’t always portrayed in the best light. The kids had an amazing experience thanks to them and the tour.”

School of Rock teaches guitar, bass, vocals, keyboards, drums and combines weekly private music lessons and group band rehearsals to prepare students to take the stage in front of live audiences in an authentic concert setting.
