STUDENTS SCORE A BIG REWARD AT THE PAVILION'S MUSICAL SCORES EVENT
Students in the Greater Houston area are rewarded with a performance at The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion for an educational outreach program, Musical Scores, May 9. Approximately 5,600 students and teachers are expected to attend the 17th annual event at The Pavilion. The event takes place from 10:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. on May 9. Twenty-six schools from eight school districts plan to attend. For a complete list of participating districts and schools, see page 4.
Since its inception in 1995, Musical Scores, one of The Pavilion’s most successful educational outreach programs, has grown from serving 200 students its first year to 5,600 students and teachers this year. The program primarily serves academically at-risk, middle school students who earn the privilege to attend a special event at The Pavilion by displaying model behavior and achieving specific scholastic goals. To be rewarded, students must achieve specific goals as established by their teachers and/or administrators. These goals might include specific academic accomplishments, improving attendance, book-reading objectives, raising test scores, modifying classroom behavior, or whatever the administrators choose. Once the students have achieved their goals, or "musical scores," they are rewarded to a free performance and lunch at The Pavilion. The students also receive complimentary Musical Scores T-shirts for their achievement.
Musical Scores begins at 10:30 a.m. on May 9 with Jean Donatto, master of ceremonies, and the Exceptional Student recognition and awards. Following the awards, special guest David Edward Garcia delivers a motivating and inspiring message with some comedy mixed into his core message of “You Can Change the Hand You’ve Been Dealt.” He has a strong empathy with students who face challenges, because he was considered an at-risk student himself before defying the odds and graduating with bachelor and master degrees. Immediately following Garcia, the students enjoy non-stop entertainment by Soul Street Dance Company, Black Violin with Drums and Houston Rockets Launch Crew. Soul Street Dance Company is a high-energy, breakin’, poppin’ and lockin’ hip-hop dancing group. Black Violin is a group of classically trained violinists who play a fusion of hip-hop, jazz, rock, blues and more. Their influences include everything from Bach to Nas and Jay-Z. The Launch Crew is an energetic performance of aerobic dance, tumbling, acrobatics and audience interaction.
For the past several years, The Pavilion has worked with Carver Magnet High School graphic arts students to create the T-shirt artwork for Musical Scores. A gifted junior, Jose Navarro, is the T-shirt design winner this year. Navarro has competed in the design project for the past two years and is in the visual art department at Carver. He was one of eight students from Carver’s graphic arts program who submitted artwork for consideration as the featured design on this year’s Musical Scores T-shirts. These complimentary T-shirts, along with free lunches, are given out to all students in attendance.
Megan McEntire, the art teacher from Carver who coordinated the T-shirt design contest through her Electronic Media classes, said “This design competition is a rare and wonderful opportunity for the students. Every student is able to learn something through their work in this competition. I personally enjoy the surprise of the winning design and coaching my students toward their finished products.”
