PAVILION PARTNERS MAY NEWSLETTER

News for May 2012

Thanks to all our volunteers for offering their time and talent to promote Partners’ mission of “Bringing People and the Arts Together.”

Returning Volunteers – Welcome back to those who are joining us again this season.  Please note that event volunteers are required to work eight events which must include at least two educational or performing arts events in order to qualify for a badge next season.  Also, if you have not yet picked up your volunteer badge, please contact Leslie Williams, volunteer and special events coordinator, at lwilliams@woodlandscenter.org.  We ask that you return your 2011 badge or bring a $5 lost badge fee when you pick up your new badge.

New Member Party – Mark your calendars for the Partners New Member Party for all our volunteers honoring our new members.  It will be on Fri., June 1 from 6 – 9 p.m. in the Woodforest Bank Club located at The Pavilion.  Watch for an Evite with more details.  Be sure to make plans to attend as this is always an awesome, fun-filled evening and great opportunity to meet our new Partners.

Events Worked – This season Leslie Williams, volunteer and special events coordinator, will send out a monthly update to event volunteers listing the number of event credits earned for each volunteer.  It is recommended that volunteers keep their own record of events worked in case there is a discrepancy.

Partners Fine Arts Scholarships – Partners recently awarded $63,000 in fine arts scholarships for the 2012-2013 academic year.  The awards include 25 new scholarships and 31 renewal scholarships to recipients studying fine arts in college.  Scholarships are awarded to students in $1,000-$2,000 increments in the following categories: vocal music, instrumental music, theatre arts, dance and visual/graphic arts.  The awards, based on talent and academic performance, were presented at a reception held on April 30.  Many thanks to scholarship chairmen, Lisa Koetting and Lyn Hullinger, and their committee for the success of Partners Fine Arts Scholarships program.

Musical Scores Lunch Preparation – Lots & lots of volunteers are needed to help pack 5,500 sack lunches for the students attending Musical Scores.  We are 15 volunteers short!  We will gather in the House of Blues Tent located inside the VIP gate at The Pavilion on Tues., May 8 from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m.  This is always a fun way to get together with other Partners.  Dress is casual.  If you are able to help out, please sign up online at www.woodlandscenter.org./staff.

Musical Scores – It is not too late for Partners to sign up for Musical Scores scheduled for Wed., May 9.  Come join the excitement as we welcome 5,500 students to The Pavilion for a day of fun!  Please arrive at 8 a.m. for orientation and a delicious breakfast in the Woodforest Bank Club and plan to remain until around 2 p.m.  Parking is in the Gold Lot parking garage located off Six Pines.  Event and performing arts volunteers are to sign up online at www.woodlandscenter.org/staff.

From the Desk of Your Partners’ President: Have a Magical Day… A friend of mine worked his way through law school as a handler for Minnie Mouse at Disneyland. He was always full of stories about his work at the park handling the fickle celebrity rodent. The best advice he gave me from working at Diseyland was, no matter how good or how bad things were going in his life at the moment, he would always take a deep breath, smile and say, “Have a magical day!”

That phrase, he told me, was a part of Disney’s training, and it was designed to make their employees always focus on ensuring that the park’s guests felt…well…magical

The Disney “magical day” mantra translated through my friend many years ago and has rubbed off on me. Disneyland guests don’t go home and just remember the rides, the food and Mickey Mouse. They remember the total guest experience.

Our situation at The Pavilion isn’t that much different.People come to hear the symphony, see the ballet or their favorite pop icon. It’s not just the show, the food and the atmosphere here. They come for a total guest experience. The Pavilion Partners are apart of that. We are the personal face of The Pavilion.

From recent personal experience, there have been times when I have had to take an urgent business call during the symphony. I would quietly walk out to a discreet place and handle the situation. Then, I would return with a smile on my face. Yes, guests want a happy, helpful volunteer.

I think we all have had our trying days with work, our families or life in general. When we walk onto the floor of The Pavilion, it’s “showtime” for us. No matter what is happening in other aspects of our lives, it’s our primary mission to make sure that our guests see us as happy and are helpful for the time they are our guests.

Have a Magical Day! …Diane Nielsen
